“Progress NOT Perfection” Devo 3-1-11

01 Mar

Today is my son’s 12th birthday! What a ride so far!   Grayson is growing up in a lot of areas. From wrestling, grades and “firm handshakes” to girls, standing alone and “yes sirs”… he has come a long way! He is right where he needs to be (in my estimation, probably ahead of the curve in some ways) But for all of his progress….he is STILL only 12 and he has potential to grow in many more areas. I think the same can be said of you, me and the Apostle Paul!

I love the way the “Message Bible” translates Paul’s words in the following verses…

Philippians 3:12-14

“I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back.”

Notice the determination and focus of Paul… but also his humility and transparency. It is almost like he is saying, “I understand that I am not a big deal and have many flaws BUT I’m gonna keep on “chasing hard after God”.

WHAT A GREAT WAY TO APPROACH OUR FAITH!

God shows himself to be constant. The same perspective that Paul has here transcends to the Christians of our time. I’m not sure this much order would still be intact after thousands of years without a plan. When you think how quickly our lives and values can change in a moments notice, say from the death of your closest friend(s), and how that can change your inner most reality and then multiply that by billions of people over thousands of years, it’s just amazing that we can still relate to words written so long ago. There is a Master, and He has a plan.
